Tis the Season
For our final paper in ENG 103 we had to write a review... on basically anything. So I decided to do a review on the Monkees' 2018 Christmas album, The Monkees Christmas Party.

The Man He Sent
When people decide upon an influential person in their life, they often think of a parent or a teacher. Not going to lie, those were some of the first people I thought of as well when deciding upon who I was going to write about. However, I have already covered those people in previous papers for previous classes throughout my life. I wanted to choose someone different. Someone that I did not realize was a huge influence on me until now. I would like to address the existence of my current pastor, Pastor Jeff Burgess, from home and how he changed my life for the better.
I was raised as a Lutheran. To this day I still am a firm believer in God and the Christian church. When I was in the 5th grade I was confirmed as a member into the Lutheran church and took my first communion. However, this was all done under Pastor Don Ritter, a man I respected and admired. Though he was a big part of my life and my Christian growth, he was also very old and many times I found it difficult to pay attention to his sermons. My parents liked to point out that it was hard to relate to his sermons due to the generation gap. In 2013, Pastor Ritter passed away and our church was in need of a new pastor. My home church, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, contacted the Michigan District of the Lutheran Missouri Synod and requested a new pastor. Until a pastor was hired we went through a circulation of substitute pastors and even had a deacon serve for a short time. During this time I went to church significantly less for a number of reasons. The substitutes were all older gentlemen, I had no way to get to church, or I just did not feel like getting up. I still went to church, but not as regularly as I felt I should. In 2016 the Michigan District sent us Pastor Jeff Burgess, a recent graduate of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Ohio. My religious habits suddenly changed when I discovered he was our new pastor.
The first thing that happened was that I went to church more often. I made it a point to go every Sunday. During worship, I felt more engaged and interested in the service. His sermons were relatable, easier to listen to, and he brought many good, new changes to the church. He made me want to go to church more. He influenced me to become more connected with God and to learn more. During my senior year of high school, he held a confirmation-review bible study for those who were either interested in being confirmed or for those who wanted a refresher course. That was the first time I had ever attended any study at my church that was outside the typical Sunday worship. He gave fantastic lessons that eventually lead to me building up the courage to ask my boyfriend, who was atheist at the time, to come and sit in on some of the studies. My boyfriend is now a baptized and confirmed member of the Lutheran Christian church thanks to Pastor Jeff. Ever since Pastor Jeff came to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, my connection with God has been strengthened. God brought Pastor Jeff to my church for many reasons, and I believe that his influence on me is one of those reasons.
