g Her hair resembled a sun set. It flowed behind her like a water fountain. From a distance, I followed her through the busy streets of Manhattan. It was difficult to follow her through the walls of humans, but I successfully tracked her all the same. Eventually she turned into the Amsterdam Broadway Theatre, causing me to lose her for a split second. I shuffled into the mob in front of the theatre, searching for the beautiful woman.
The lobby to the theatre was decorated of that of a Victorian mansion. The walls presented elegant swirls of dark greens and blues. A chandelier illuminated light onto the portraits of many famous actors and actresses who performed in that theatre. The purple carpet held at least one hundred human occupants, all awaiting entry into a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. There she was, standing next to the portrait of Olive Thomas, the woman with the red hair. To my disappointment there he was. A slim, tall man who looked down at the woman with a bright grin upon his face. My heart plummeted to the pit of my stomach. Suddenly I found myself walking towards them, not by choice. “Hey man! Watch it!” I heard as I hit what felt like a brick wall When I first recouped with reality everything was a blur. All the blurs I could see were tinted blue. Slowly my vision recovered. It took me a minute to realize my circumstances. My arms, legs, and torso were clasped in metal straps, my head comforted by a small pillow. Above me a large portrait of space was stationed. Attempting to turn my head to the left, I found Jenna, insentient, in the same situation as myself. Turning my head in the opposite direction, there was her brother, struggling to free himself. The room shimmered in the corner of my eye. A large blue lamp hung over John to cause this effect. “It’s no use man.” I stated, trying to calm him down before he hurt himself. “What do you know? Tell me, what do you know?” He screamed back at me. “All I wanted was to enjoy a nice Broadway play with my sister! That is all I wanted! Then you showed up and now we’re on a bloody spaceship full of metal men! So go ahead, say it’s no use, I dare you!” Utterly confused, I asked what he was talking about. He responded likewise: “Right man, so remember the metal men in the theatre? This is there ship. I’ve been awake for some time now man, and people have been dropping like flies. Literally. I woke up in one of their little prisons down the hall. It was like a gas chamber from the Holocaust films. The metal men would come in and start “evaluating” us. If we weren’t what they were looking for they’d shoot you dead. Lucky us huh? If we were deemed worthy we were brought into this little room and we turn into them. We turn into the metal men.” My heart started to beat faster. It felt as though it was going to rip out from my chest. It would be a more pleasant death than what John continued to describe to me. A sharp, sneering sound then rang in my ears. This sound must have been the sound of a door opening because accompanied by it was the sound of large, metal footsteps. I began to sweat tremendously. Soon, before me stood one of the metal men. It looked like the perfect robot. No exposed wires, had two perfect arms and legs, and it wore a shimmering breast-plate. Two tubes extended from the sides of its head and reconnected in a small pillar on the top of its head. Its mouth was a small rectangular hole and its eyes were two circles. Its eyes looked as though it was crying. Its voice showed no emotion however. “This specimen is compatible. He will be upgraded.” Before the metal man could continue a female scream commenced, cutting him off. “No! You can’t! He’s not compatible! He’s a tramp! Hobo! You don’t need him! You don’t need the other man either! So bug off! Send them home!” The metal man cocked his head in Jenna direction, staring at her blankly. He then turned back to me. “You are no longer compatible. You will be deleted.” The last thing I ever heard was the most beautiful scream in the world, crying out in pain for me. I found myself in Central Park. People continued on with their lives as I stood there, watching. All of the history there appeared before my eyes. It was beautiful. It was a while before I noticed people walking through me. Realizing I was dead, everything seemed to become more wretched than before. Then, upon a bridge by the lakeside, there she was. Jenna Williams stood upon that bridge with her brother John and another man. This man was as tall as John. He was slim, with rich, brown, floppy hair. He wore a purple bowtie to match his Victorian appearance. He had a large chin and a goofy smile. They all laughed. I ran up to them, yelling. They didn’t hear me. Once I made it to the scene the man’s face grew cold. This is what he said. “Your friend was brave. Sounds like you encountered the Cybermen. They are aliens from the planet of Mondas. This planet and its inhabitants were similar to Earth’s. They changed themselves, thinking that their way of life was better. They terrorize Earth every now and then because they think that the humans should live like they do. All they care about is the production of their race. I wish I could have saved him in time.” The man looked down at the street below. “What was his name?” Jenna’s hazel eyes grew sad, tears riding on her eyelids. She choked saying my name. Once it came out she broke down balling, hiding herself in John’s arms. The man did not divert his eyes from the street. After a moment he walked away. Jenna stopped him. “Will we ever meet you again?” He didn’t reply, but it felt as though he was staring directly at me. I looked into his eyes, I could see his history. I knew Jenna and John would never see him again. His history was cold, dark, a story that should never be told. This mystery man wasn’t really a man. He was a being from another world, and he just saved the whole of humanity from the Cybermen.

Annotated Bibliography: Asperger’s Disorder
Asperger’s Syndrome is a mild alternative to autism. Similar symptoms show such as isolation, limited interests, inability to express themselves, difficulty talking to others, but fascinating results when it comes to memory and brain skills. Discovered by Hans Asperger in 1944, Asperger’s can been seen in many life stories and novels. In the novel, the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the main character Christopher has autism, and he shows more defiant symptoms than a child with Asperger’s Syndrome. In the novel, of Mice and Men, Lennie Small is a victim of mental retardation, which also shows signs of social problems and problems expressing themselves. Both of these characters have to be cared for. Christopher is taken care of by his parents, whereas Lennie is taken care of by George Milton. People think that Asperger’s Syndrome is a disorder, but in reality it’s just another way of taking in the world around you. "Asperger Syndrome." KidsHealth - the Web's Most Visited Site about Children's Health. Ed. Rhonda Walter. The Nemours Foundation, 01 Jan. 2012. Web. 14 Apr. 2015. Asperger's Disorder is a part of a colony of conditions called, 'Autism Spectrum Disorders.' This disorder was named after its founder, Hans Asperger, who diagnosed the first signs of in his patients in 1944. Most of his patients were males. The discovery of this disorder took place in 1944, close to the time that Of Mice and Men took place. This reveals that people began making medical observations shortly after Steinbeck published his novel, showing what impact the novel might have made. Howell, Melanie. One of the questions asked, "What will happen to your child after you're gone?" The answer to this is that the mother is not worried, and believes he will live an independent life, and if he takes a hit there will be adult support systems that he can access. This seems like the lives Christopher will live once he graduates. Lennie from, of Mice and Men, lived a similar lifestyle after his Aunt Clara passed away. He had George as his support system, and lived the life the Great Depression gave him Jmb99. "Of Mice and Men. Mental Disability." Of Mice and Men. Mental Disability. N.p., n.d. This mental disability effects every 3 in 100 people. To diagnose a person with mental retardation their IQ tends to be under 70. Symptoms include delays in learning, difficult memory and problems with social contact. Reading that mental retardation reminds me of Christopher's social problems. It's ironic that both people with a different way of thinking and people with mental disabilities have social problems "Living with an Aspergers Partner." Living with an Aspergers Partner. N.p., n.d. Some issues for people who have a spouse who has Asperger's include feelings such as guilt, isolation, being over responsible, and frustration. This is similar to the feelings Christopher's parents had concerning Christopher. His mother would get frustrated quickly and his father would get over protective Ozbayrak, Kaan. Also known as 'Asperger's Syndrome,' this the Asperger's Disorder is a mild variation of autism. Individuals that are categorized with Asperger's Syndrome are children whom isolate themselves during childhood and have eccentric behavior. These children tend to have a limited areas of interest that are not common. In the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time the main character Christopher has autism, which is similar to Asperger’s. Christopher limits his social interactions by ignoring the other students of his class and he only focuses on sciences and mathematics.
In 1957 libraries, schools, and other public edifices began to remove the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from their inventory. People believe that this book was deemed ‘too dangerous’ for the minds of young teenage boys, fearing they would become violent in some way, shape, or form. They believed that this book would offend African Americans by showing them as property instead of people. However, this book is history. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain in 1885, was meant to reveal to the United States, and even the world, that we are treating humans like property. Its purpose was to remind the people of the future how life used to be, how cruel we were.
It’s said that this book is racist, but again, that’s how Mark Twain wrote it. He wrote it the way he did to show that in our past, in the 19th century, the United States was indeed ‘racist.’ Twain’s use of the ‘N’ word over 200 times is just an example of how they spoke in the past. The ‘N’ word also helps signify Huck’s transcendent conflicts on whether helping Jim, who was an African American slave, was the right thing religiously, or the right thing consciously. In our day in age we have found slavery to be cruel. A white man from the 19th Century would have found slavery to be right in every way. It’s only based off belief, not fact. Rewriting the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn would be like fixing an instrument with scotch tape. It will not look the same, and it will not give out the same message. The new generations of teenagers need to be exposed to the original documentation of this book to get a feel of history. Rewriting an original document from the 19th Century will not give students the same feeling. For example, the ‘N’ word is more powerful as a word because it’s a word we do not use in our daily lives. The word ‘slave’ is only a cover word, and you don’t get the same feeling as when the ‘N’ word is used. In conclusion, history should not be tampered with. Twain gave us the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn not so we can amend it, he gave it to us so we can learn from the lives of millions who lived in the 19th Century. He offers us this book to remind us to take care of one another spiritually and physically. Historical documentation is there for us to learn from it, not to change it. In 1993 Disney was inspired to create a movie representation of the famous book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This renowned novel was written in 1880’s by Mark Twain. The book takes place in the far South, along the Mississippi, where Huck Finn and a runaway slave named Jim, run from the chains of civilization and slavery. The Disney movie, The Adventures of Huck Finn, contributes key factors from the book, and inflames the same message as Twain’s novel.
In addition to the similarities of their titles, the movie and book do share some correspondences. For example, the movie includes many of the novel’s main characters; Huckleberry Finn, Miss Watson and her slave Jim, the Duke and the Dauphin, the Grangerfords, the Shepherdsons, Huck’s Pap, and the Wilks family. They all play key parts in the book, and deserved the right to be incorporated into the movie. In this movie Huck Finn, portrayed by Elijah Wood, a young boy who strives for freedom and gains it by faking his death in his Pap’s cabin. Throughout both the film and the book, Huck goes through spiritual conflicts on whether helping Jim get to freedom is right or wrong. As far as similarities go, that’s about it. When it comes to differences, there are many, many, many differences between the book and its recreation. For starts, the characters portrayed in the movie differ from the novel in many ways. Huck Finn, who in the book takes the form of what sounds like a fourteen year old boy, takes the form of an eight year old in the Disney movie. Also Huck’s battles between right and wrong are far more verbal and prejudice in the movie than in the book. In the movie, Huck takes up the challenge of verbally telling Jim that people of his kind should not be free, and when Huck does he makes a big fuss over it. However, in the book Huck tells his reader of his opinions and struggles, but doesn’t confront Jim with them. The movie also seemed to merge or remove full chapters from the book to save for time. For example, they removed Chapter IX, the House of Death Floats By, and daintily included Pap’s death in the scene from Chapter XIII, Honest Loot from the Walter Scott. This amputation and stitching continued throughout the movie, making sophomores at Mancelona High School fidget in annoyance to the changes made. The one change, however, that the movie produced, is the removal of Tom Sawyer. Believe it or not, Tom Sawyer was a key factor to this legend, even if he only appeared at the beginning and end of Twain’s novel. Disney removed this key character, causing a gigantic rewrite in the story of Huckleberry Finn, which, again, caused sophomores in Mancelona to panic over the inaccuracy of the movie. Towards the end of the book, as Tom, Jim, and Huck fled the Phelps farm from angered farmers, Tom was shot. However, since Tom wasn’t in the movie, Huck was the one to get shot. These are only a few of the thousands of differences between Mark Twain’s novel and Disney’s movie. Except not every movie can be a perfect representation of its book. There were many contrasts, but there were similarities. The film Disney produced about this young boy’s legend deserves the right to be called, The Adventures of Huck Finn, because it stayed true to the lesson Mark Twain desired to be heard when he wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Everyone deserves freedom, but freedom comes in different shades and different shapes. Slaves are just men with a different color of skin, and they deserve to be as free as the white boy sitting next to them. Just give them the opportunity and they can prove that they have the right. We are here. We are at football games, basketball games, and even at pep rallies. We are the marching band. Who cares? The marching band cares. We work day in and day out for four years to provide you with an excellent halftime show during the football season, and provide an honorary performance for the spring parades. We work on our music in school and out. How can we find time to earn our Physical Education/Health credit without dropping the classes we crave? There are students who are in Band and Choir, and even Art, waiting to take their Health/P.E. credit till their senior year of high school because they don’t desire to drop either Band or any other class that may benefit their education. There is more to school than just passing, so why don’t we kill two birds with one stone? Let’s allow the band kids their half credit for physical education and allow them to keep doing what they love. The school can do this, just look at the Michigan Merit Curriculum.
According to the Michigan Merit Curriculum, every student in the state of Michigan must have one full credit of Physical Education/Health to graduate. If a student goes through the proper paperwork, they can take any physical activity and make it their physical education credit. To allow any student to change how they gain this credit the student must develop an Education Development Plan, which requires the student to engage in the desired activity from 8th grade through graduation. The student must also take one additional English/Math/Art/Science/Foreign Language class. If the student does not fulfill taking the physical activity, it becomes null and void, and the student must take the physical education/health class in order to graduate. As long as the teacher of the activity has a degree in Physical Education, and the desired activity is available for all genders, any physical activity approved by the school can count as the physical half of the P.E./Health credit. (Michigan Merit Curriculum High School Graduation Requirements) Marching Band is in all ways physical, and can count as an alternative to gym class. “Today, marching bands no longer just march in precision formation,” says Gary Granata, an exercise phycologist and owner of the New Orleans based company PerformWell, “In the past 20 years, marching bands have gone to these highly choreographed visual shows, where performers are literally running around the field at very high velocities with heavy instruments while playing very difficult passages.” (Rauscher) Now with this kind of performance, it must involve a lot of physical stress right? Bands will spend a good eight-to-ten hours a week, sometimes even in a day, practicing in intense heat, carrying heavy instruments and blowing air into those instruments like it’s no one’s business. (Rohn) In 2010 Granata and some colleges of his gave out an anonymous questionnaire to 172 band students at Avon High School in Indiana. Ninety-five percent of the band students reported muscle soreness after performing or practice. A quarter of the students reported that they actually felt ill after practice. Another thirty-eight percent reported physical injuries after practice. (Rauscher) As students from the Mancelona Marching Band can agree, marching band starts off with warm ups, traversing with instruments backwards, forwards, left, and right. Then we continue with learning/running the halftime show, which usually takes most of the hour, playing the same complicated rhythms over and over again. As Danielle Mussleman, a senior clarinetist at Mancelona High School, has said, “Band requires diligence and perfection, you only get one shot to get it right.” Students from the Mancelona Marching Band have reported that marching band improves their breathing on a regular basis, gives students some awesome calves, and ‘biceps of a god,’ as said by one student. These results come from the breathing habits required for marching band, roll stepping in all directions, and the constant possession of an instrument during a performance or during practice. (Heegeman) Marching band isn’t just physically demanding either. Like sports, marching band requires and teaches students motivation, social skills, situational awareness, and appreciation. When one is with the marching band, there are times where one tries to be better than the rest of their section. Students also learn to work together with their fellow musicians to try and fix a set, or rehearse a section of music, or even encourage each other to work harder. When on the field, one must make sure they know where everyone else is, because if not, then the director may have to deal with a collision of students and instruments, and a collision during a halftime show would not look virtuous at all now would it? Marching band gives a student appreciation for their instrument, their music, and for what they do. (Lautzenheiser) All those factors are similar to those in sports. In 2010 Petoskey High School’s Roy Harvey, the president of the P.H.S. Band Boosters, had the same idea about marching band, and approached Jim Kanine, P.H.S.’s principal, about the issue. Harvey proposed this issue because he knew of the physical demands marching had on students, and that the band students couldn’t fit P.E. into their schedules. Kanine agreed with Harvey and allowed band students to have marching band as their P.E. credit. However, the physical education teachers at P.H.S, Dennis Starkey and Ray Arthur, want to know where will the line end? How come the marching students get this kind of exception, but not the athletes? They spark a valid point, but here’s how Kanine responded to the teachers’ outburst; the athletic department didn’t approach him about the issue. (Rohn) Yes, athletics and marching band are very demanding, and of course athletics could be a part of any student’s physical education credit, but you’ve got to ask first. In conclusion, students in marching band must met similar strains as those in any other sport. We have to reach our sets in a certain amount of time, staying in step with the rest of the band, being aware of the people around you, all while performing music using an instrument which needs to be held a certain way in order to perform its job. So, since all schools in Michigan most likely have the ability to make marching band an exception to the Physical Education/Health credit, why not allow it? Most band kids would willingly give up gym for band. Give us something we love to do so we can focus on completing our academic classes, working on our drills, and not finding out when we’ll take gym in the four short years we have in high school. Edward Murrow; a news broadcaster, a clever New Yorker, and an employee of CBS News. Just a little insight of the man who helped bring the self-destruction of Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy. However, the question is, what brought Murrow to destroy McCarthy? Fame? Common sense? Doing what was right? Read on, and take a look into the history of Murrow, McCarthy, and how Murrow did it.
In the early 1950’s, the Second Red Scare infected the United States. This case of the Red Scare found its way into the heart of the country; the government. One senator, Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, was a senator that seemed to be the most associated with this fear of communism. McCarthy’s philosophy was that any man who had any connection to communism had to be a communist. This became a problem in the eyes of Edward Murrow. Murrow himself believed that what McCarthy was executing was unfair and unjust. When trials arose to prove a suspected communist guilty or innocent, McCarthy had little to no evidence that they were even communists, and McCarthy still got away with confirming the suspicion. Murrow believed that this had to be exterminated entirely. So, going to Fred Friendly and his coworkers at CBS, Murrow began his trek to eliminate ‘McCarthyism’ for good. Murrow’s actions to end McCarthyism included broadcasting speeches right from Joseph McCarthy himself, quoting him, and broadcasting the issues on live television. Doing this would make the people of the United States, more importantly the government, aware of what McCarthy was doing and what seemed right and wrong. This had cost Murrow his prime time spot and his sponsors, but he was able to get the word out, and eventually McCarthy was but on trial for his crimes and accusations, making Murrow’s movement a total success. *Inspired by a Journal Write from Ms. Miller's AE10 Class*
The vigilance of the sovereign Elisabel protected the kingdom of paternal bliss. Indolent shadows cast themselves upon the tempestuous waters. The unknown appellations of Elisabel’s people remained unobtrusive as natal festivals took place on the beach. Dotage canines roamed the esoteric edifice which was called the market place. The queen herself would frequently travel to the villages of her kingdom and befriend her rustic people. Progenies would travel to the school house every day for their lucubrations, fathers would proceed toward their professions in the morn and the mothers to theirs in the night. Communities of villagers formed up and down streets, all centered on the market place. Carriages hauled by horses would traverse in a vicissitude fashion through the streets as the little girls would pick stray flowers and the little boys would play cricket after school, allowing the carriages to pass within a single call. Along the bay where no festivals were held, there was a dock with barks all along it’s edge. Men would travel to their barks and travel to sea, and come home with tomorrow’s supply for which their employer would sell. Elisabel was definitely one to reverence over. Elisabel’s laudable eyes made her venerable to her people. Those profound brown eyes could make any man fall to his knees in frenzied praised. Elisabel had the voice of an angel, speaking to you from the bowels of Heaven itself. She held upon her head elongated rosy hair which would daily be entangled in a braid and ornamented with a tiara of gold. Elisabel was honored with her empire and could ask for nothing less, until the day of the Black Pestilence. Within hours the Black Pestilence, as called by many persons, would begin enervating the life out of the kingdom, and Elisabel herself. Elisabel knew not how to conquer the Black Pestilence. For many years Elisabel stayed within the walls of the palace, tucked away for what many believed would be forever. Rumors told that her eyes grew grey, vanishing every day. Her voice shriveled into a cold whisper, and her rosy hair dribbled off her frail shoulders, and faded into a light ginger. For three long years no man, woman, or child of Elisabel’s empire saw her. No one was permitted into her bedroom, nor could they even speak to her. Many began to believe that she had perished and the palace staff refused to tell, and there was a plot behind the Black Pestilence. Over time, the Black Pestilence leaked away from the townspeople, but only to survive in the room of which Elisabel sleeps. Till this day, no person has gambled their life to discover whether Elisabel was alive or not. The key words however, are ‘till this day.’ First assignment of the school year! We are reading the Scarlet Letter, and our assignment was to write a paper on the power of one. Enjoy! :) Sorcery & Sacrifice
The Power of One is resilient. Many think that a movement can only be bestowed this title if it changes the lives of hundreds, or even millions of people. That is not entirely true. I go by the name of Isaac. Once upon a time I was a 6 year old boy, and once upon a time I had a 13 year-old sister by the name of Elisabel. She had sacrificed something of hers for me, and it changed my life forever. This selection of my life will prove that you don’t need to change the world to have the Power of One, it proves that you can start with just one person. It was 1693, and the young ginger, Elisabel Harrison, was agitatedly searching the market place for her little brother, me. The smell of hay filled the air, and the bustling noises of daily business rang in the ears of the villagers. Elisabel yelled my name, but it could not be received by the human ear. For hours now she had been searching for me, according to my aunt, and by the minute her fears produced. Elisabel then heard a scream, my scream. She recognized the sound of my voice anywhere. Then she sprinted across the market place. As soon as I saw her, and she me, she began to run faster. Once she was close enough, she leaped for my legs, only tasting the victory of clutching onto my ankles. At this time I was being dragged behind a large man, mysterious, dark, and definitely, to put into the words of a six-year-old boy, scary. After a minute of aching ankles, the man stopped my sister and I both. Elisabel squeezed me close to her, as the man questioned her. His voice was like thunder. “What are you doing lass? This boy is a wizard he is. Taking to be questioned he is.” Elisabel’s eyes watered. “He isn’t a wizard! He’s my little brother! I’ve lived most of my life with him! He is not a being of any magic whatsoever!” The arguing continued. I sat back, mutely crying away my fears. For what was to come next haunted me forever. Elisabel sighed. She looked at me, kissed my brow, and stood. Her head tilted so she could look into the eyes of the beast. Another sigh came from Elisabel. “He isn’t a wizard. Our house held a person of magic. Myself. I am the witch you’re looking for.” I cried out in disapproval. I could barely see now, but what I could see were the tears bleeding from her eyes. I rose to my feet and attached myself to Elisabel, sobbing. The beast ripped us apart, throwing the young girl over his shoulder, and marched away, leaving a trail of my sister’s tears behind. This was the last time I have ever seen Elisabel Harrison, and I will say this, she did all she could to save me, and she did it alone. That’s enough to be considered the Power of One, right? Remember this, it’s what one person does that’s counts no matter if it’s one person or a thousand. It’s what happens that counts. |
